NEW YORK: Democratic Party Airs Second Clinton Ad
Jumping back into the New York Senate race, the New York State Democratic Party released its second ad supporting First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) in her campaign against Rep. Rick Lazio (R). The 30-second ad, which will start airing Thursday in upstate New York, focuses on Lazio's vote against the Bipartisan Consensus Managed Care Improvement Act of 1999 (HR 2723). Claiming that the bill would have provided a "real patients' bill of rights," registered nurse Sandra Morales states: "If a patient is denied medical care or surgery or even prescriptions because a company has decided that this is not something that they cover, the patient suffers." The ad's announcer adds: "HMO bureaucrats are making life-and-death decisions. Yet in Congress, Rick Lazio voted against the real patients' bill of rights, favored by health professionals so they can do their jobs." Morales concludes: "We need this law because it will save lives -- it will save lives" (National Journal Group, 6/29). To view the ad, go to http://video.cloakroom.com/2000archive/06/0629nydc1.rm. Campaigning in Missouri
Meanwhile, in the Missouri senate race between incumbent John Ashcroft (R) and Gov. Mel Carnahan (D), Ashcroft has unleashed two ads touting his support of a Medicare "lock box." The first ad, titled "Bio," began airing on June 15 and chronicles Ashcroft's life. In the ad, the announcer says: "[Ashcroft's] lock box is protecting Social Security. Now a bipartisan Ashcroft lock box will protect Medicare." The second ad, titled "Lock Box," states: "John Ashcroft's lock box stops Washington from spending a single penny of Social Security on other programs. Now he is leading the bipartisan effort for a Medicare lock box -- to protect health care for seniors" (National Journal Group, 6/29).
