Newsom Previews Budget Proposal
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom (D) on Wednesday said his proposed fiscal year 2006-2007 budget includes $1.7 million for high school and middle school wellness centers, which offer students health education, counseling and support services, the San Francisco Chronicle reports (Vega, San Francisco Chronicle, 5/25).
Earlier this week, Newsom said the budget also will include $600,000 for a medical respite center to ease the patient load at San Francisco General Hospital. The proposal will allocate $135 million for civic improvements, to be funded by higher-than-expected tax revenue, Newsom said (Vega, San Francisco Chronicle, 5/23).
The budget proposal -- expected to total about $5.3 billion -- will be presented to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors June 1 (San Francisco Chronicle, 5/25).
