Nurses March at Capitol for Single-Payer Health Care
More than 1,000 nurses rallied at the state Capitol on Tuesday in support of a bill (SB 840) by Sen. Sheila Kuehl (D-Los Angeles) that would establish a state-run, single-payer health care system in California, Capital Public Radio's "KXJZ News" reports.
A single-payer system would help ensure all state residents could access health care, according to supporters at the rally.
The rally was sponsored in part by the California Nurses Association (Russ, "KXJZ News," Capital Public Radio, 5/8).
A transcript and audio of the segment are available online.
KPBS' "Full Focus" television program on Monday included a discussion with Gerry Jenkins -- a nurse at UC-San Diego Medical Center and a member of CNA -- about why many nurses favor Kuehl's plan over Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's (R) health care reform proposal, which would leave private insurance intact (Penner, "Full Focus," KPBS, 5/7).
