NURSING HOMES: Times Calls for Reform
California "has yet to take action on oversight" of the state's nursing home industry, the Los Angeles Times charges in an editorial, noting that despite assurances by new HHS Secretary Grantland Johnson that reforms are on the way, "[m]ore than two decades of delay ... are enough." The Times calls for the passage of a nursing home reform measure introduced by Assemblyman Kevin Shelley (D-San Francisco). Among the key reforms in the measure, notes the Times, is the institution of surprise nursing home inspections and an increase in top fines from $25,000 to $100,000 (3/11).
