Nursing Shortage Persists in San Mateo County
The high cost of living and a low number of nursing school graduates is limiting the supply of nurses in San Mateo County, according to a report by the county grand jury, the San Francisco Examiner reports. The greater Silicon Valley area needs 400 more nurses than are currently available, experts at the Silicon Valley Center for Health Professions estimate.
The report recommends that:
- Peninsula Health Care District continue to fund nurse training;
- PHCD and Sequoia Healthcare District work with nurses to secure loans for housing; and
- San Mateo Community College District work to develop a new nurse training facility.
