Parental Notification Measure Discussed
Several local broadcast programs on Friday included discussions and reports on Proposition 85, which would require parental notification before an abortion is performed on an unmarried minor, with provisions for a judicial waiver. Summaries of the segments appear below.
KPCC's "Patt Morrison" broadcast the live discussion on the proposition recorded on Thursday. Guests on the program included:
- Monica Shaneyfelt, a 17-year-old student at Santa Paula High School;
- Katie Short, legal advisor for the campaign supporting Proposition 85;
- Martha Swiller, spokesperson for the campaign against Proposition 85 and executive vice president for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles (Morrison, "Patt Morrison," KPCC, 10/20).
KPCC's "KPCC News" included interviews with several teenage girls in California about how they would feel about telling their parents if they were going to obtain an abortion.
The segment also includes comments from Carol Barnes, a family physician who supports Proposition 85, and Swiller (Nazario, "KPCC News," KPCC, 10/20).
