Physicians Account for 68 of 100 Highest-Paid Los Angeles County Employees
Sixty-eight of the 100 highest-paid employees of Los Angeles County are physicians, according to a list compiled by the county at the request of the Los Angeles Times.
The list includes 25 doctors at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, whose salaries ranged from nearly $180,000 to more than $239,000. Nine physicians at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, which employs more full-time staff than King/Drew, were included on the list, and 10 physicians at Olive View/UCLA Medical Center were included.
According to the Times, "[m]ost" county supervisors "expressed dismay" at the list, in part because the reported salaries were for a year when King/Drew failed accreditation inspections and nearly lost federal funding because of lapses in patient care (Leonard/Ornstein, Los Angeles Times, 7/14).
In related news, KPCC's "KPCC News" on Tuesday included an interview with Nancy Hanna, the new director of residency training programs at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, and Thomas Yoshikawa, chair of internal medicine at Martin Luther King/Drew Medical Center, as acting president, provost and chief operating officer of the university, which administers physician training programs at King/Drew, about challenges faced by the new leadership (Rabe, "KPCC News," KPCC, 7/12).
