Political Opposition Derails Appointment of Workers’ Comp Chief
On Wednesday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) appointed Carrie Nevans chief administrative director of the state Division of Worker's Compensation, reflecting the political obstacles to her confirmation as the head of the division, the Sacramento Business Journal reports.
Nevans has served as acting director of DWC for three years.
Some workers' compensation advocates worked to delay her confirmation as director of the division because they wanted her to boost benefits for permanently disabled workers.
The Senate adjourned for the year without holding a confirmation hearing for Nevans. Her appointment as chief administrative director does not require Senate confirmation.
In July 2009, the division plans to implement a new permanent disability rating schedule, seven months later than expected (Johnson, Sacramento Business Journal, 10/30).
