PRENATAL CARE: L.A. Times Calls Davis’ Decision ‘Wise’
Gov. Gray Davis has "wisely" taken a different course than his GOP predecessor Pete Wilson concerning prenatal care funding for illegal immigrants, an editorial in today's Los Angeles Times says. While the $60 million in Medi-Cal funding for prenatal care included in Davis' budget proposal "represents a tiny fraction of the $78 billion state budget," the Times contends that the care can be "critical" to the women and their babies whose "lives might well hang on it." The editorial concludes: "Davis justified his policy as being directed by the court decisions rejecting cuts during the Wilson administration. We see the motivation also as his caring and common sense" (1/15).
