Prescription Drug Costs Lower at Cash-Only Pharmacy
A pharmacy opened in Kern County last month that dispenses only generic prescription drugs on a cash-only basis, the Bakersfield Californian reports.
According to pharmacist Bart Tipton, the cost of generic drugs at the pharmacy "can often save (customers) almost half" compared to chain pharmacies. Tipton attributes to price difference to a lack of quantity limits and reimbursement rate schedules imposed by insurance companies. Without insurance company contracts, the pharmacy can set its own prices, which are often much lower, according to Tipton.
The pharmacy is directed toward uninsured residents, but it also could attract customers whose generic drug copayments are increasing, Tipton said (Loyd, Bakersfield Californian, 5/15).
