PROPOSITION 187: Davis May Take Issue to Mediation Table
Gov. Gray Davis is set to announce at a press conference today that he will take the Proposition 187 case to mediation at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, according to sources. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Davis' "low-profile method of dealing with the issue" is an attempt to "not damage his carefully nurtured alliance with Latino voters." Sources say the governor has decided "to take the case to a mediation panel where a settlement might be easy to reach because both the governor and the other party in the lawsuit, the League of United Latin American Citizens, each oppose the initiative" (Gunnison, 4/15).
