PROPOSITION 187: Revival Efforts Thwarted
The "Son of Proposition 187," will not be on the November ballot, as supporters of the anti-illegal immigrant measure were unable to garner sufficient support from lawmakers and community members, the Orange County Register reports. A "watered-down" version of Proposition 187, the new initiative would have denied services, such as prenatal care, to undocumented residents. Although Proposition 187 was approved by 59% of voters in 1994, both supporters and opponents of the new measure said that "times have changed radically." Supporters abandoned the revival efforts with only one month left to gather the 670,816 signatures required to earn a spot on the ballot (Wisckol, 4/21).This is part of the California Healthline Daily Edition, a summary of health policy coverage from major news organizations.
