Public Health
An editorial in the American Journal of Public Health supports work to boost access to oral health care, highlighting programs in New York City, New Mexico and North Carolina aimed at uninsured and underinsured groups.
According to the editorial, the programs share three common factors:
- Community involvement in planning;
- Utilization of existing safety net resources; and
- Policy changes to support funding and delivery of oral health.
The editorial maintains that oral health care services are a key component of comprehensive health care services for underserved populations (Formicola et al., American Journal of Public Health supplement, September 2008).
