Public Member Elected Medical Board President
Steve Alexander of La Jolla was elected president of the Medical Board of California, the board's first public member president in seven years.
Alexander, a public affairs strategist and facilitator, has served on the board since 2001. The medical board comprises 12 physicians and nine public members.
Alexander plans to focus on three initiatives during his tenure:
- Restructuring the board to create an efficient physician licensing system, ensure enforcement and disciplinary actions are fair and effective and ensure consumers receive timely, accurate and useful information about their doctors;
- Implementing a new enforcement model that pairs the board's investigative staff with deputy attorneys general; and
- Increasing medical error reporting by physicians (Medical Board of California release, 5/18).
