AB 2340 by Assembly member Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach) was amended on April 25 to specify that a spouse or domestic partner is to be contacted by a health care provider to serve as a surrogate if a patient lacks the ability to make health care decisions or appoint another surrogate. The amended version also includes a provision that would require health care providers to contact other individuals, as specified, when a spouse or domestic partner is unable to act as a surrogate. The bill was re-referred to the Assembly Judiciary Committee (StateNet, Subscription required).
