Report: Five Calif. Cities Among Top 10 in U.S. for Physical Activity
Five California cities are among the top 10 most active in the U.S., according to a recent report by BetterDoctor.com, the Sacramento Bee's "Healthy Choices" reports (Caiola, "Healthy Choices," Sacramento Bee, 2/17).

The report scored 85 cities based on their:
- Access to and spending per resident on public parks;
- Healthy weight percentage; and
- Levels of physical activity (Raghavan, BetterDoctor.com report, 2/15).
The rankings were determined by data from CDC and the Trust for Public Land ("Healthy Choices," Sacramento Bee, 2/17).
Overall, Aurora, Colo., ranked highest, with 43% of its population at a healthy weight and 83.8% of its population having exercised in the last 30 days. Laredo, Texas, ranked lowest, with 29.1% of its population at a healthy weight and 65.8% of its population having exercised in the last 30 days
California Findings
Overall, 10 California cities made the list of healthiest areas.
The five cities that ranked in the top 10 overall were:
- San Francisco, which ranked 2nd, with 44.8% of its population at a healthy weight and 82.6% of its population having exercised in the last 30 days;
- Oakland, which ranked 3rd, with 44.8% of its population at a healthy weight and 82.6% of its population having exercised in the last 30 days;
- Sacramento, which ranked 8th, with 40.9% of its population at a healthy weight and 84.7% of its population having exercised in the last 30 days;
- Irvine, which ranked 9th, with 43.1% of its population at a healthy weight and 78.9% of its population having exercised in the last 30 days; and
- San Diego, which ranked 10th, with 41.2% of its population at a healthy weight and 81% of its population having exercised in the last 30 days.
Meanwhile, the lowest ranking California city was Riverside, at 54th overall (BetterDoctor.com report, 2/15).
