SAN BERNARDINO: County Hospital Becomes Election Issue
Vowing to prevent what he calls "a county financial freefall" caused by construction of San Bernardino County's new hospital, county supervisor candidate Bill Peters says he will "unseat incumbent Supervisor Jon Mikels" in the upcoming June 2 primary. Peters believes Mikels' approval of the new medical center in Colton will create a "financial black hole" for the county, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reports. "It was a bad idea. Did we need this hospital? Not at that price tag," said Peters. The Daily Bulletin reports that "detractors have dubbed" the new hospital "the Taj Majal." Mikels did not comment on the issue, the paper reports (Hughes, 3/10). Last month California Healthline reported the "boom in construction" for Inland-area hospitals.
