SAN FRANCISCO: Receives $36 Million HIV/AIDS Grant
U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) yesterday announced that "San Francisco will receive $36 million in federal funds to assist people living with HIV/AIDS," the San Francisco Examiner reports. The Ryan White CARE Act grant, to be administered by the San Francisco Health Department, will benefit 63 organizations that provide services in San Mateo and Marin counties. The Examiner reports that the city's HIV Planning Services Council will distribute the grant, which covers the period of March of next year through February 2000. "This is good news," said Laura Thomas, a health planner with the city health department's HIV services. Although the city had hoped for more, the amount is "about what we expected," Thomas said (Brazil, 12/16). Click here for previous coverage of HIV/AIDS in San Francisco.
