San Jose Mercury News Opposes Parental Notification Measure
Proposition 85 "would turn back California's long and proud history of first focusing on the safety of children," a San Jose Mercury News editorial states (San Jose Mercury News, 9/21). Proposition 85 would require parental notification before an abortion is performed on an unmarried minor (California Healthline, 8/7).
The editorial states, "If Californians want to reduce the number of girls who have abortions, then they should lend even stronger support to the public and private agencies working so hard to further reduce the number of teen pregnancies."
Citing voters' rejection of Proposition 73 in the 2005 special election, the editorial concludes that voters "would do well to settle the issue" of parental notification "once and for all by sending it to an overwhelming defeat Nov. 7" (San Jose Mercury News, 9/21).
