San Mateo County Considering Discount Rx Drug Program
San Mateo County's Housing, Health and Human Services Committee recently recommended that the county join the National Association of Counties' Prescription Drug Discount Program, the San Francisco Examiner reports.
The program would provide discounts to residents on any drugs that are not covered by their insurance plans. About 77 pharmacies in the county have agreed to participate in the program.
The county Board of Supervisors could review and vote on the proposal as early as the end of May.
Ten other California counties participate in the program, according to the Examiner.
NAC contracts with pharmacy benefit manager Caremark Rx to administer the program.
Caremark negotiates the discounts with participating pharmacies, which provide the discounts under the assumption that they will increase their sales (Worth, San Francisco Examiner, 5/8).
