SANTA CLARA COUNTY: Family Health Plan Wins Partnership Award
The Santa Clara Family Health Plan has been chosen by SmithKline Beecham as the winner of its 1999 Health Care Partnership award, bringing the plan a $50,000 grant in recognition of its success in improving access to quality health care for low-income families in the area. "Santa Clara Family Health Plan was the most impressive of the many outstanding entries we received from managed care organizations throughout the country," said SmithKline's Dennis White. By taking advantage of Healthy Families and Medi-Cal, the plan was able to increase the number of low-income families receiving health care by 13% over the past year, working closely with community-based organizations to boost outreach efforts. "Family Health Plan's ability to identify community health care needs and to leverage state programs to benefit low-income families where language and cultural issues are also barriers was a concept that the judges found profoundly effective," White said. The Family Health Plan said it would use the award to further its outreach to schools in underserved neighborhoods. The plan was created in 1997 by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors (release, 4/12).
