Senate Unanimously Votes To Confirm Kim Belshe as Secretary of Health and Human Services
The Senate on Monday voted 34-0 to confirm Kim Belshe as secretary of the Health and Human Services Agency, the AP/Contra Costa Times reports (AP/Contra Costa Times, 3/16). Belshe served under former Gov. Pete Wilson (R) as director of the Department of Health Services and deputy secretary of the Health and Welfare Agency until 1999, when she left the government to serve as program director for the James Irvine Foundation. In addition, Belshe served as executive vice president of the California Endowment from mid-October until her appointment as HHS secretary in November. The agency, the state's largest, operates more than 11 departments, has 34,000 employees and supervises more than $61 billion in state and federal funds (California Healthline, 11/17/03).
