Several Calif. Hospitals Rank Among Best in U.S. for Specialty Care

Several California hospitals made U.S. News & World Report's 2012-2013 list of the top U.S. hospitals, U-T San Diego reports.

Methodology

To compile the list, U.S. News evaluated 732 hospitals in 16 specialties.

Rankings were based on federal data that included:

• Infection rates;
• Nurse-to-patient ratios;
• Patient safety; and
• Patient survival rates.

U.S. News also considered national surveys of medical specialists (Lavelle, U-T San Diego, 7/16).

California Hospital Rankings

According to U.S. News, the top 10 hospitals in California ranked in order are:

• Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, with 14 nationally ranked specialties;
• Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, with 12 nationally ranked specialties;
• UC-San Francisco Medical Center, with 11 nationally ranked specialties;
• Stanford Hospital and Clinics in Palo Alto, with 10 nationally ranked specialties;
• UC-San Diego Medical Center, with four nationally ranked specialties;
• Keck Hospital of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, with three nationally ranked specialties;
• John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, with three nationally ranked specialties;
• Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, with two nationally ranked specialties;
• Scripps La Jolla Hospitals and Clinics, with one nationally ranked specialty; and
• UC-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, with one nationally ranked specialty (Comarow [1], U.S. News & World Report, 7/16).

Honor Roll Hospitals

U.S. News also assembled an "Honor Roll" that recognizes 17 hospitals in the U.S. that achieved high scores in six or more specialties.
