S.F. Mulls ID Card for Undocumented Immigrants
A San Francisco supervisor introduced an ordinance on Tuesday to issue identification cards to undocumented immigrants in an effort to help them gain access to city health care programs and other basic services, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
To obtain the card, individuals would have to prove residency in San Francisco and present a form of identification, such as from a foreign country. The San Francisco ID cards would be optional.
Supervisor Tom Ammiano said he has received assurances that the cards would not violate federal immigration laws.
Mayor Gavin Newsom (D) has endorsed the program (Buchanan, San Francisco Chronicle, 9/19).
