Stem Cell Agency Benefactor Donates to UCSF
Ray Dolby, founder of the Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco, and his wife, Dagmar, plan to donate $16 million to the University of California-San Francisco to help fund a new stem cell research center, UCSF officials announced Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
UCSF has tentative plans to construct a $100 million center named the Institute for Regeneration Medicine. Proposition 71, which voters in 2004 approved to fund stem cell research, "could become a major grant source" for the program, the Chronicle reports (Hall, San Francisco Chronicle, 5/12).
Last year, the Dolbys donated $5 million to the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to fund the agency while pending litigation blocks Proposition 71 funds from being released (Elias, AP/San Francisco Examiner, 5/10).
