Stockton’s population is healthier than ever before, and a new report shows the area to be the most improved in the nation for health and health care. The Stockton region, which includes San Joaquin and Calaveras Counties, ranked 92nd out of 306 areas nationwide in 2016. (Ibarra, 8/2)

Last week, officials with the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge installed a device they hope they never have to use — an automated external defibrillator (AED), used in cases of cardiac arrest to assist CPR and help hearts find lost rhythms. The cabinet containing the unit is located next to the center’s office counter, high up on a wall where curious, young hands cannot likely reach. St. Joseph Hoag Health opened a clinic inside an Irvine LA Fitness this week that offers physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic services to consumers regardless of gym membership. The 1,000-square-foot clinic, specializing in muscular, joint and spinal health, is part of the nonprofit health system’s movement to promote wellness in convenient places where residents already spend their time.
