SUMMIT/ALTA BATES: Lockyer Seeks Appeal of Merger Approval
State Attorney General Bill Lockyer has asked the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco to review a district court judge's Dec. 27 decision allowing the merger between Oakland-based Summit Hospital and Berkeley-based Alta Bates Medical Center to proceed. However, a spokesperson for the attorney general said the appeal is simply a procedural move and that Lockyer, who is currently reviewing the district court's 47-page opinion, may decide to rescind the request. The two hospitals officially completed their merger just hours after the district court decision was announced (Abate, San Francisco Chronicle, 1/8).
