TOBACCO DEAL: Sell-Out Or Settlement?
Last month, the attorneys general of 46 states signed an historic $206 billion settlement with the tobacco industry, resolving suits filed against the companies to recoup public expenditures on smoking-related illnesses. Before the ink was dry, public health activists charged that it was more of a sell-out than a settlement. In this week's Stryker's Corner, California Healthline's Jeff Stryker gets some help from pharmacologist and health policy analyst Lisa Bero in sorting out the complex new agreement.
