UC Regents To Vote on Plan To Cut Inpatient Kids’ Care at UC-Irvine
On Wednesday, the UC Board of Regents will vote on a plan that would reclassify 25 pediatric beds at UC-Irvine Medical Center as adult beds and transfer inpatient pediatric services to the Children's Hospital of Orange County, the Los Angeles Times reports.
If the plan is approved, UCI Medical Center's eight-bed pediatric intensive care unit also would be integrated into the hospital's general intensive care unit.
UCI Medical Center spokesperson John Murray said there will be no net loss of pediatric beds as a result of the change.
However, the proposal has drawn opposition from the California Nurses Association labor union and local residents (Esquivel/Yoshino, Los Angeles Times, 11/13).
