Wall Street Journal Profiles Las Vegas Cancer Care Institute
The Wall Street Journal on Friday profiled the efforts of MGM Mirage President Jim Murren and his wife, Heather Hay Murren, to establish a "state-of-the-art cancer institute" at the University of Nevada. According to the Journal, academic researchers have attempted to establish such a cancer institute for five years, but with the involvement of the Murrens, the effort "has raced from idea to bricks and mortar in two years." Jim Murren hired his casino contractor to construct the cancer institute, and the contractor convinced his subcontractors to complete the work at a reduced payment rate. In addition, Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn (R) supported a bond issue to help fund the construction of the institute. The Journal reports that the institute, scheduled to open next year, is "an example of the casino industry's need to move beyond slot machines and deal with the Las Vegas region's heady growth over the past decade" (Binkley/Rundle, Wall Street Journal, 8/13).
