WEST HOLLYWOOD: Condom Advocate Angered by ‘Hate’ Posters
Debates over public health and condom use "turned personal" yesterday, as posters labeling health advocate Michael Weinstein a "Condom Nazi" were plastered in the restrooms of gay bars throughout West Hollywood. The signs call Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, "an enemy of the gay community" and attack his proposal for mandatory condom distribution throughout the city's bars and restaurants. Weinstein, who is Jewish and gay, said the posters were "an ugly act of anti-Semitic and homophobic hate" (Pool, Los Angeles Times, 1/25). A press conference was held Monday to denounce the attacks and "condemn this act of hate speech" (AHF release, 1/21).
