California Health Care Personnel News Update for September 2009
California Medical Association
The California Medical Association has named Alfred Gilchrist CEO, the Sacramento Business Journal reports. Gilchrist will assume his new post in November.
Previously, Gilchrist served as CEO of the Colorado Medical Society and director of state and federal government advocacy for the Texas Medical Association (Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal, 9/21).
Hospice of the Valley, San Jose
On Sept. 9, Hospice of the Valley named Neal Slatkin chief medical officer, the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal reports.
Slatkin previously served as a professor and director of supportive care, pain and palliative medicine for the neurology department at the City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte (Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal, 9/9).
Later in the month, Hospice of the Valley appointed Linda Golino, Terry Rutledge and Euan Thomson to its board of directors, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Golino serves as service director of skilled nursing, durable medical equipment and medical transportation for Kaiser Permanente medical centers in San Jose, Santa Clara, Redwood City and South San Francisco.
Rutledge is Samaritan Medical Center's vice president of strategic planning, and Thomson is president and CEO of the health technology company Accuray (Gottschalk, San Jose Mercury News, 9/17).
Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, San Francisco
On Sept. 15, the San Francisco Department of Public Health named Tess Navarro CFO of Laguna Honda Hospital, the San Francisco Business Times reports.
Navarro has served as CFO of the city's Health Service System since 2005 (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 9/21).
San Mateo Medical Center
On Sept. 2, San Mateo County Health System named Susan Ehrlich CEO of San Mateo Medical Center, the Business Times reports. Ehrlich had served as interim CEO of the center since April (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 9/2).
Previously, Ehrlich served as the hospital's first CMO (Bishop, San Mateo County Times, 9/3).
Touro University
Touro University has named Marilyn Hopkins provost and chief operating officer, the Vallejo Times Herald reports. Hopkins will assume her position in a part-time role Oct. 5 and will take over full-time duties in December.
Hopkins previously served as dean of the College of Health and Human Services at CSU-Sacramento (Rohrs, Vallejo Times Herald, 9/27).
UC-San Francisco School of Medicine
On Sept. 17, UC-San Francisco named Sam Hawgood dean of the UCSF School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs, the Business Times reports. The appointment took effect immediately.
Hawgood had served as interim dean of the medical school since late 2007. Compensation for his new position will be $645,475 (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 9/17).
USC Health Care Units, Los Angeles
USC has named Mark Amey chief information officer of its health care units, Health Data Management reports. Amey previously served as CIO and vice president of Ascension Health Information Services.
In his new role, Amey will oversee health information technology initiatives at the Doctors of USC physician group, the Keck School of Medicine, USC Norris Cancer Hospital and USC University Hospital (Anderson, Health Data Management, 9/24).
