SAN JOSE: Superior Court Approves Alexian Brothers Acquisition
In a move that will "change the medical landscape in San Jose," the Santa Clara County Superior Court has "cleared the way" for Columbia/HCA to take over not-for-profit Alexian Brothers Hospital, the San Jose Mercury News reports. The for- profit giant will now control about half of the commercial beds available in central and southern Santa Clara county. The settlement agreement commits some $15 million to capital improvements and $4 million to provide health care to low-income residents. Consumers Union had sought more funds for charity care (4/30). The decision will allow Columbia to downsize San Jose Medical Center and consolidate services with Alexian Brothers Hospital, despite loud protests that the reshuffling would result in dramatic job losses in downtown San Jose (California Healthline, 4/29).
